“Fossil Polymers in Food Packaging during COVID-19 times”
Is petroleum-derived plastic indispensable for safe consumption of food and to avoid food waste?
While there is no evidence that food or food packaging can transmit the COVID-19 according to the European and American food agencies, there is also no evidence to the contrary and consumers do not want to buy wholesale food because they have doubts. Would it be safer to touch a piece of fruit or a plastic bag containing it?
As we prepare to ban single-use plastics in Europe and the US, the plastic industry used the threat of contamination of the new coronavirus to delay prohibitions on single-use plastics. The fear of contamination of reusable shopping bags seems to have caused a pause in the implementation and application of bans on disposable plastic bags. In the earliest times our health and safety will override the controversy of non-biodegradable plastic waste and perhaps the “disposables” will return to the agenda.
